RH HOTELS COVID-19 PREPAREDNESS


On 26 March 2020, President Ramaphosa implemented a nationwide lockdown in South Africa, and has applied a COVID-19 Risk Adjusted Strategy that provides a framework for a responsive guide to the social, educational and economic activities which can be undertaken during the state of national disaster. RH Hotels supports this decisive action, aimed at flattening the curve and slowing the rate of COVID-19 infections.

During this time, all of our RH Hotels properties will be temporarily closed to the public and, during the lockdown period, we have skeleton staff working remotely, responding to emails and queries and our websites remain open for future reservations. 

Some hotels may be called upon to provide support to government and essential and critical business continuity service. These may include either quarantine facilities or essential services staff accommodation. Whilst none of our hotels have been called upon, we remain ready to support these initiatives, should the government require our services.

We have put in place the following COVID-19 protocols, which will be implemented as soon as our hotels are able to welcome guests.  These measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of both our staff and our guests and are listed below:

 

Pre-opening sanitisation

The hotels will be disinfected prior to commencing operations. This entails using hospital standard Sintol Cleaning processes according to WHO guidelines.

 

Screening of guests on arrival

Screening has been mandated by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 15 March 2020. Therefore, guests will be required to complete and sign a questionnaire, as well as allow their temperature to be scanned with a thermal scanner.

Non-symptomatic guests with temperatures falling within the normal range, will be required to sanitise their hands and then proceed to check-in.

Should a guest’s temperature be high and/or they have symptoms of the virus they will not be allowed to check-in and will be referred to a medical facility.

 

Staff Screening

All staff sign a Declaration of Health before returning to work and are referred for medical testing if necessary.  All staff have their temperature tested daily when arriving at work, before entering the premises. Anyone showing temperatures higher than the globally accepted levels, or showing any symptoms, will be immediately sent home to obtain medical clearance and will have to self-isolate for a mandatory 14 day period.

In addition to screening will be a disinfecting spray of all staff shoes and bags as they enter and leave premises.

 

Regular routine cleaning of public areas and high touch-points will be carried out on a daily basis.  Areas such as restrooms, breakfast rooms, restaurants, table tops, counters, hand rails, door knobs, back office surfaces, lift buttons and front desk surfaces are wiped down on a regular routine throughout the day, with a polycide chemical (a disinfectant cleaner) that kills most viruses.

In addition to regular routine cleaning, we have implemented the wiping down of all surfaces with a chemical disinfectant called Surface Defense Standard Treatment, which has a lifespan of 90 days once it has been applied. It is being applied to surfaces as a sealant prior to the daily regular routine cleaning that is taking place, which includes: door handles of restrooms and guest rooms, restaurant table tops, bar counters, boardroom tables, hand rails on stairwells, buttons of lifts, speed point machines, front desk counters and entrance door handles.

 

Hand sanitisers & Personal Hygiene Kits

Alcohol based hand sanitisers have been placed in all public areas and in back-of-house areas and all staff and guests are encouraged to make use of these sanitisers on a frequent basis.  Guests may also request a complimentary Personal Hygiene Kit from reception, which includes a travel-seized hand sanitiser, sanitising wipes and a disposable mask.

 

Education of staff and personal hygiene

We are providing ongoing training on what the virus is; ways in which it is transmitted; symptoms to look out for; and daily measures to prevent contamination and spread of viruses in personal, operational and guest spaces. Personal hygiene is being reiterated, including the importance of washing hands frequently and thoroughly; avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth; practicing respiratory hygiene (sneezing and coughing into a tissue that is safely discarded or the crook of the elbow), and avoiding touching one’s face.

 

Guest Awareness & Communication

All hotels will display Social Distancing and safety protocol informatino in public areas to make guests aware of our Covid-19 measures and procedures. 

 

Protective gear

All housekeeping and public area cleaning staff are issued with protective gloves and face masks when on duty. All staff are issued with facemasks, as per NICD requirements.

 

Social Distancing Guidance

We encourage all guests to follow the Government’s Social Distancing Guidelines and avoid close contact with anyone who is coughing, sneezing and feverish.  Our restaurant and bar seating will be adjusted to accommodate the government guidelines of one person per 1,5m2 area.

Anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness will be reported to the hotel’s general manager for further action to take place, such as contacting the NICD hotline. The NICD Hotline number, as well as posters directing guests to the government’s official website: sacoronavirus.co.za are on display throughout the hotels.

 

Food & Beverage

For guest safety, the following Food & Beverage precautions and protocols will be in place:

  • Bars will operate strictly under the current government regulations.
  • Buffet breakfasts have been replaced with either pre-packed breakfast packs at Holiday Inn Express Hotels and a la carte menus at Holiday Inn Johannesburg-Rosebank and RH Hotel Pretoria..
  • All material serviettes will be replaced with disposable serviettes.
  • Restaurant tables will be reduced and spaced 2 meters apart.
  • In keeping with Social Distancing guidelines, each restaurant will seat a limited number of guests.
  • No contact Room Services will be implemented, at Holiday Inn Johannesburg-Rosebank and RH Hotel Pretoria, with a waiter knocking and placing the tray outside of the room and standing back 2 meters.

 

Closure of certain facilities

In accordance with government legislations, our hotel gyms, swimming pools and converence venues will be closed until further notice.

 

Whilst we do not yet have guidance on when hotels will be allowed to open in South Africa, we are constantly monitoring developments and putting strategies in place to mitigate risk and reduce the potential spread of this disease.  For information, we recommend using the sacoronavirus.co.za government website, or contacting the NICD (National Institute of Communicable Diseases) helpline on 080 002 999.
